I'd say that a video game I have been playing forever that doesn't really acknowledge the perspectives of feminine characters is Grand Theft Auto. Even though in my life I used to play this religiously, it does have a stereotype that it is very masculine and the target market definitely appeals to males more than female population. It also makes people out to be thugs and criminals when in reality that just isn't true. Even though it is a game there are certain aspects that make it very stereotypical. Major sports in my opinion lack the acknowledgement of women. I'd say the NBA is getting a lot better as they have now started bringing in female referees. Yet, the NBA still needs to do a better job at promoting the WNBA and trying to bring that more to the mainstream.
Hey Rodina, thanks for sharing! I also read that article and found it to be really interesting to learn about all of the positive effects of digital play. As someone who is not a gamer, it gave me an inside look at the dynamics of certain video game communities and the lack of female gamers, specifically black feminist ones. To answer your question, I agree with David by saying that another area that I think lacks good feminist perspective is in a lot of professional sports. I understand that there are sports that have teams of each gender, but I feel like there is a very large gap between the two. The first thing that comes to my head is a lack of female referees and announcers for the NFL. I know quite a few women who are very vocal about their love of sports, specifically football, and are also very knowledgeable about it as well. I think that a common excuse for this lack of female representation is because many assume that women "don't know as much" about football as the men do, which is not always true. I also feel like there needs to be more coverage by female announcers and broadcasters. These professional sports environments could benefit from more feminist involvement and could bring the leagues even more exposure.
