Whiteness is defined by Robin DiAngelo and others as the multi-dimensional status of one's self in regard to race, class, and actions and practices that serve to elevate Whiteness. It's not just a comment of one's skin color but an indication that being White comes with a background of structural advantage and privilege's not afforded to other races.

I think this more broad definition of Whiteness would be helpful for a lot of those who balk at the concept of white privilege and the like. Growing up in a small town in Wisconsin, whenever these kinds of topics would be brought up in school there'd be a lot of pushback and arguments about the legitimacy of it all. So often they see it as just a difference of skin color - so when they take the "colorblind" approach that DiAngelo talks about, they believe there isn't any more to be done. If white people beginning their teachings on racial issues were to learn DiAngelo's definition of Whiteness sooner, they may be able to accept teachings on white privilege and institutionalized racism with less pushback, since it starts with a more realistic approach to being white than just a description of physical attributes.
