white fragility

Diangelo talks about how white fragility is when white people become too stressed when they talk about race. Or when there is a trigger that challenges the whiteness and causes behavior to try to go back to comfort and reinstate that white inequality. Diangelo also continues to go on and say that whites have not had to build cognitive ways to be constructive about race. This is something I have noticed with my parents when I have tried to correct them on something they have said. I have noticed that they start to be combative and defend everything and will literally contradict themselves to make them seem like their right to protect their whiteness.

Then Diangelo goes on to say that we constantly see messages that say white people are better through representation. In TV and movies, we usually see only white people. It conveys that white people live in better neighborhoods, have good jobs, and are heroes. This also goes onto even something deeper: religion. Depicting Adam and Eve as the first humans to be white, automatically suggests that not being white is wrong.

  1. Hi Katie,

I also chose to discuss about DiAngelo's piece in my blog post. An interesting read no doubt, but one I think is important. The topic of white fragility talks about how white people find it hard to have conversations about race. I grew up in a fairly diverse school district, so I felt like I had a grasp on topics related to race. However, in one of my classes my freshman year, I was able to see that there was more than what meets the eye. The point you brought up about Adam and Eve is a compelling one. It didn't cross my mind that something like this idea could come into play. Additionally, your analysis on examples like TV shows and movies I think is spot on. It is more typical to see white people starring in shows than POC. DiAngelo's article shows that there is still so much more progress to be made.
